Billykirk are running a revivalist operation - sort of like the folks from Rising Sun, who we profiled in our first episode. Not recreating objects from the past, but recreating a spirit from the past - a spirit of quality and craftsmanship. These guys seem to have a wonderful understanding of the idea of making something, both in construction and aesthetics, that lasts for generations and isn’t made to be thrown away. Something that, rather than wearing out, patinates. Gets better.

My mother is a college professor, but in her free time, she’s a sort of part-time antiques dealer. Something I learned from her is that it’s never a mistake to spend money on an object that will gain value rather than lose it. Whether the value is utilitarian, aesthetic or monetary. That’s why I buy so much of my clothing second-hand, and that I almost never buy new furniture. If you have something special, it doesn’t get used up, it gets worn in. It gets richer.

A glance at Billykirk’s stockists makes it clear that these guys are making something for the fashion world, but they’re also making something that will outlast fashion. This bag costs a pretty penny, but will its usefulness outlast three similar bags made of Nylon in China? Certainly so. And their beauty is utilitarian, not filigreed. Their aesthetics are built to last. And I feel strongly that whether or not you can afford it to buy it, you can appreciate it and learn from it.

The man behind the beautiful tumblr The Impossible Cool got upset with me the other day about this post, about Billykirk’s collaboration with J. Crew, a beautiful wool-and-leather trilby. I wrote that it was designed by fashion types, sold by a mass-market retailer, and would likely be purchased by numerous douchebags. (Did you see the episode of The Office where Ryan wore a trilby inside the whole day?) I also said it was lovely, which it is.

I think Sean thought I meant that people who bought the hat were douchebags - in fact, if I had the money sitting around and access to a fancy men’s J. Crew, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. I felt awful about leaving that impression, and apologized profusely for being unclear (we’re cool now).

My true point was that we’re lucky to be living in a moment where quality and timelessness are not just occasional byproducts, but actual goals of creating a piece for Barney’s or Bloomingdale’s… or even for J. Crew! And that whatever your cultural biases are - whether you hate the idea of fashion, or you hate the idea of mass-market retail, or you hate the idea of not standing out from the guy in the club who’s following the former two… you shouldn’t let any of that get between you and something that will bring beauty to your life for many, many years.

Which, from what I can tell, is what Billykirk are shooting for.

Obi-Wan: Uncle Owen, I chopped off his legs and watched him get all burned up. It’s not like anyone has the technology to heal him.

Uncle Owen: What?! They absolutely do. We can travel at light speed through outer space, we sure as hell can heal some burn victim who has magic powers. I’ve got a bad feeling about this…

Obi-Wan: I wouldn’t worry. It’s not like he’d be able to find you.

Uncle Owen: Oh yeah, I’m sure the Emporer’s right hand man would never think to check his home planet, his only living relative, or the only other person in the galaxy named “Skywalker.” Can’t we call him something else? How about Luke Smith?

Obi-Wan: Luke Skywalker. Check the birth certificate.

Uncle Owen: But if we named him ANYTHING else, it might be at least slightly harder to find him.

Obi-Wan: What are you even worried about? Anakin would never hurt anyone who didn’t deserve it.

Uncle Owen: Didn’t you say he killed a bunch of kids?

Obi-Wan: Ohhhhh right. That. Yeah, he killed a ton of Jedi toddlers - we call them Padawans - and yes,
they are the cutest things in the galaxy. They’ve got these mini-lightsabers and little robes. So adorable. But yeah, he slaughtered them all without even a hint of remorse.

Uncle Owen: Why couldn’t he live with his sister Leia? She doesn’t have to keep his last name, or live on a desert planet ruled by giant slugs where all we have to drink is blue milk.

Obi-Wan: No, trust me, this is the best way. Don’t worry - I’ll be close by if you need anything. I’ll have you know I learned a pretty amazing power in case ol’ Anakin ever comes back.

Uncle Owen: Yeah, what is it?

Obi-Wan: Right when he thinks he’s got me…I’ll let him slice me with his lightsaber and kill me. But then I’ll be a ghost!

Uncle Owen: HOW WILL THAT HELP ANYTHING?

Obi-Wan: Well…ya know. I can give Luke advice and stuff. Like “use the force.” But all ghost-y.

Uncle Owen: Couldn’t you tell him that while you’re alive?

Obi-Wan: No, dying is a solid plan. If it makes you feel better, I know where the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy is.

Uncle Owen: Where?

The jack-o-lantern tradition comes from an old Irish folk tale about a man named Stingy Jack. It was said that he was unable to get into heaven and was turned away from the devil because of his tricky ways. So he set off to wander the world looking for a resting place. For light, Stingy Jack used a burning coal ember in a hollowed out turnip. When the Irish immigrated to the U.S. during the Great Potato Famine of 1845-1850, they found that turnips were not as readily available like they were in the homeland. So they started carving pumpkins as a replacement for their tradition.

can you even do that after you are 18? what would it take - another ID, visits to all the banks, signing next to old documents, or would you just keep your old one to match old documents and then for new things use the new one?
